Department of Spanish and Portuguese

College of Letters & Science

Spanish | Undergraduate

The undergraduate program in Spanish presents numerous opportunities for students of all levels to develop language skills and integrate these skills in courses that explore a wide variety of topics in Spanish and Hispanic literatures, linguistics, and cultures. Our faculty and staff include scholars in fields ranging from literature, theater, film and other facets of visual culture to theoretical and applied linguistics, including phonology, syntax, language contact and change, language pedagogy, and bilingualism. Our faculty's and staff’s expertise in these areas contributes to a richness of course offerings and opportunities for students to develop understanding of and appreciation for the linguistic, cultural, and social diversity that characterizes the Spanish-speaking world. We additionally aim to guide students in the development of skills in such areas as articulation and critical assessment of diverse viewpoints, linguistic and literary analysis, and the conduct of independent research.
