Professor Hélio Seixas Guimarães is one of the most distinguished faculty members in Brazil's top-ranked program in Brazilian literature at the University of São Paulo. He is a leading authority on nineteenth- and twentieth- century Brazilian literature and is among the foremost experts on the oeuvre of Brazil's most prestigious literary figure, Machado de Assis. The author of five monographs, the editor of seven volumes, three translated books and thirty-nine articles, prefaces, and book chapters, Professor Guimarães serves as one of the chief editors of the online journal Machado de Assis Em Linha. He has also been guest editor for special issues of many other journals. His two key monographs, Machado de Assis, o escritor que nos lê (2016) and Os Leitores de Machado de Assis (2012), garnered encomiastic reviews in scholarly journals, the former earning the coveted Jabuti Award for best book of literary criticism. Professor Guimarães's expertise is not limited to Machado de Assis, however. He is a prolific and versatile scholar, whose research encompasses not only reception theory, but "cultural studies, intertextual analysis, media studies, visual culture, photography, gender, race, class (especially in relation to social hierarchies of slavery), and translation studies, among others.
