Graduation Reception

The Department of Spanish & Portuguese holds a Graduation Reception every May recognizing departmental graduates from that spring, the previous fall, and the upcoming summer. Graduates of all levels are welcome!

The Graduation Reception is held the Friday morning of Commencement Weekend from 10:00am-noon at the Union South Marquee. We begin with an informal reception with light refreshments from 10:00-11:00am, followed by our formal recognition event from 11:00am-noon. Graduates will be recognized individually.

Because we recognize students who may or may not attend Commencement Ceremonies the following day, cap and gown are not required.

Graduating students will receive an invitation via email in late March and should RSVP through the survey included in the invitation by the date specified, generally in mid-April.

Where and when is the Graduation Reception?

The Graduation Reception is held the Friday morning of Commencement Weekend from 10:00am-noon at the Union South Marquee. We begin with an informal reception with light refreshments from 10:00-11:00am, followed by our formal recognition event from 11:00am-noon. Graduates will be recognized individually.

How does the Graduation Reception differ from the Commencement Ceremony?

The Department of Spanish & Portuguese Graduation Reception is a formal recognition event that takes place the Friday morning of Commencement Weekend from 10:00am-noon. During the event, graduates of all levels will be recognized individually, walk across the stage, and shake hands with the Department Chair.

The UW-Madison Commencement Ceremony at Camp Randall is for UW-Madison bachelor’s and master’s candidates and takes place the following day at noon. Chancellor Blank will confer degrees and recognize graduates by program; however, there is no individual recognition nor do graduates walk across a stage.

The UW-Madison Commencement Ceremony for doctoral and professional degree candidates takes place the Friday evening of Commencement Weekend at the Kohl Center.

Are tickets required?

Tickets are not required, but all students who intend to participate in the Graduation Reception are required to register through their invitation email. Students will indicate the number of guests they intend to bring during the registration as well.

Is there a limit to the number of guests allowed?

We ask that students limit their guest count to no more than four people. If students would like to bring additional guests, information will be collected through the RSVP and students will be notified of additional guest availability by the end of April.

What happens if I cannot or do not attend the Graduation Reception?

Graduate attendance is completely voluntary; the university will mail your diploma several months after Commencement. Opting to bypass either the Graduation Reception or Commencement Ceremonies will not affect your graduation status. The Department does, however, encourage all of our students to participate.
