This talk explores the intersection of race and modernity in Black revues in Rio de Janeiro in the 1920s, examining Brazilian teatro de revista as a combination of a cosmopolitan discourse of Black affirmation — rooted in Parisian négrophilie and African American revues — and the celebration of Afro-Brazilian expressions associated with ideas of “popular culture.”
